Huckabee in Control

Huckabee in Control

The Caucus process is giving us a good look at the candidates with intended as well as unintended consequences; so far Huckabee in control. He may not be moderating the discussion but he has, without any doubt, taken over the agenda which translates to Huckabee being in control. On Jan.5, 08, the Republican candidates attended a Foxnews debate hosted by Chris Wallace. Of the 5 Republican candidates represented, only two were able to convey a part of themselves without regard to the positions of the other candidates, Thompson and Huckabee. They were attempting to get their points and agenda across and were content to let the “other” guy have his. Everyone else was comparing himself or referencing Huckabee’s latest position next to or contrasting with their own. Each of the five are great men and any of them would be a worthy leader yet Huckabee was firmly in control of the agenda. It became more obvious, not less, as the debate wore on.

Huckabee in Control

The problem with one guy dominating the discussion, the way Huckabee did is that it turns the other candidates into very sour, unattractive, boring candidates. This is bad for their (our) election chances. Conservativism, as a Philosophy is the only thing that stands between the people and Tyranny! The Republicans sat up there defending Republican principals rather than elaborating on them! How can they expect to win an election like that? Huckabee wasn’t trying to take control ; he simply had control and portrayed, to the American public, a take control kind of guy. Gone is the appeal to the Evangelical right in Huckabee’s elaboration of his principals. Gone are is the ability of the other candidates to simply dismiss him as they have done to date. Gone are the religious questions that sought to hem him into a Christian box throughout the beginning phases of his campaign. Huckabee was in control and they didn’t like it.

Huckabee in Control

Reading the impressions while watching the debate, all of the Republican candidates appeared to have the long knives out for Huckabee. This
presumed air of inheritance, displayed by everyone but Huckabee, has much to do with Huckabees outsider status. They just don’t get it. America is looking for an outsider as they are fed up with business as usual. Business as usual won’t get any of them elected. Where is the creativity or the application of principal? What are the “bottom line” changes these candidates offer to America? Giuliani can’t recite his New York experience and hope we find creativity in it through osmosis. Mitt Romney carefully crafted his image to make him appear to be the “Chairman of the Board” during the debate.
America is convinced! In a Boardroom, there is none better than Mitt Romney but we are not electing a Chairman, we’re electing a leader. McCain is “Washington as Usual”; no amount of dressing it up will change that. He looks the part and he is the part. Huckabee and Thompson were the only one’s that weren’t intimidated by the parameters of the questions and the positions of the other candidates. Thompson wasn’t vying for control, he simply stated his reasons for running and did an impressive job of it. Huckabee was in control whether they liked it or not.

The election is starting to look like it will be Huckabee’s to win or loose. All the insiders, both in government and on the talk show circuit have it in for him. He has not received their anointing, nor has he asked for it which has put them into a mild form of apoplexy.
In the near future Huckabee will have to run the minefield set up by his brother candidates, the Republican’s. After that, he will have to take on Obama as soon as he dispatches Hillary and Wonderboy from the race. It will be interesting to see if his resources will hold out. So far, he is looking pretty sharp but he’s out on a limb further than he’s ever been. One false move and they will capitalize on it like locust on a wheat stalk. At some point, the other Republicans will stop responding to him and start to run their own race. At that point, Huckabee will no longer be in control.
